The problem
SABRENet is South Australia's dedicated research and education fibre network, connecting universities, schools, and research institutions across the state.
As demand for high-bandwidth applications continues to grow, organisations connected via SABRENet require flexible access to data centre infrastructure and high-performance internet services.
In addition, extending connectivity to sites where fibre is not feasible presents an ongoing challenge, particularly where cost or physical constraints limit deployment options.
SABRENet also operates network infrastructure in the field, requiring reliable remote access for monitoring and management.
What we did
Caznet works alongside SABRENet to extend the value of its fibre network by providing data centre access, internet connectivity, and supporting services for end customers.
A key example is Aquinas College, where SABRENet fibre is used to connect the campus directly into the Caznet data centre, enabling high-speed access to enterprise internet and cloud services without requiring new fibre construction.
Caznet has also assisted in testing point-to-point 10 Gbps laser connectivity between the data centre and customer sites. This technology provides a high-speed alternative to fibre where traditional builds are not viable or cost-effective.
In addition, Caznet provides 5G mobile broadband SIM services to support remote access to SABRENet-owned network infrastructure deployed in the field, enabling monitoring, management, and maintenance without reliance on fixed connectivity.
The result
Through integration with Caznet's data centre and network, SABRENet-connected organisations can access enterprise-grade internet and infrastructure services while leveraging existing fibre assets.
This approach reduces the cost and complexity of delivering high-performance connectivity to education and research organisations.
The development of alternative access technologies, including 10 Gbps laser links, provides new pathways for delivering high-speed connectivity to sites where fibre is not practical.
Mobile broadband services enable reliable remote access to field infrastructure, supporting ongoing network operations and maintenance.
Together, these solutions extend the reach, flexibility, and capability of South Australia's research and education network.
